What Do Quail Sound Like?

Ever wonder what baby quail sound like as they start finding their voices? Spoiler alert: it’s ridiculously cute. I popped into the coop to grab a quick video of our three week old quail, and let me tell you – these little fluffballs are chatty.

These are Coturnix quail, a fast-growing and friendly breed that’s perfect for backyard setups. Ours are just three weeks old and already making the sweetest chirps, peeps, and curious calls as they settle into their new home.

Speaking of their home, we got a little creative with the setup! The main coop started as a rabbit hutch that I painted brown and modified with a wire cutter to add an opening on the side. To the side opening, I attached a pet house for extra space and enclosed area for the quail to enter when needed. I elevated the pet house using a cut tree trunk from some trees we recently had taken down.

Since early spring can still be pretty chilly, I also added clear tarp around the sides to help keep the quail warm during those cool March and April nights. To make sure they don’t go on unexpected flying adventures when I open the top of the hutch or pet house, I also added green netting to cover the openings.

Inside, they’ve got all the essentials:
✅ A chicken feeder for easy access to food
✅ A chicken waterer for fresh water
✅ Optional pet house for some extra space
